(RD28) RD28 - Shredder: Shreds everything!
Published: Sat Apr 14 2012
Today, I replaced the motors on the shredder and took out the suppo bl-2212/13 1000kv motors out and swapped them for RCTimer BC-2212/6 2200kv motors. I did this thinking that the increase in RPM would solve the inadequate thrust issue that kept shredder on the ground. I experimented and launched a USTREAM channel and broadcast the build. A big thanks to my single viewer Mark over at FLITELAB.COM who enjoyed the show and offered many pearls of wisdom, many of which I tried or even adopted. :)
So for this, I started by removing each motor pod, each pod consists of a two motors, facing back to back.

These motors, seemed to have too low of RPM to enable the little props to cut enough air, and produce enough thrust to get teh shredder off the ground. So after removing the pod, we swap out both of the motors for the new RCTimer replacements.

Next I replaced all the motors in all the pods and drilled out teh main holes for the shafts because the bell housing near the shaft on the RCTimers were a bit bigger that the suppos and were too tight.
Next I had to lower the starting RPM of the motors in the Copter Control configuration. Next it was necessary to add a landing gear becuase each test flight managed to catch the props in the carpet and undo the friction fit prop adapters causing dangerous glass filled plastic props to go careening around the room. Watch out kitty!!!
FInally, I got it to fly, but it requires serious tuning, and perhaps even a diiferent FC. Here is the outcome:
